Dictionary of North Carolina Biography

Vol. 5, P-S

Edited By William S. Powell

The most comprehensive state project of its kind, the Dictionary provides information on some 4,000 notable North Carolinians whose accomplishments and occasional misdeeds span four centuries. Much of the bibliographic information found in the six volumes has been compiled for the first time. All of the persons included are deceased. They are native North Carolinians, no matter where they made the contributions for which they are noted, or non-natives whose contributions were made in North Carolina.

About the Author

William S. Powell is professor emeritus of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His many books include North Carolina through Four Centuries, which won the 1989 Mayflower Cup for Nonfiction.

Reviews

"The most remarkable people of North Carolina march across the pages of this primer of historical personalities. . . . Unparalleled in the annals of biography [and] a tribute to a remarkable editor, Bill Powell, and his legion of dedicated contributors. . . . So good, it almost would be worth dying just to be in it!"
--Roy Parker, Jr., contributing editor, Fayetteville Observer-Times

"The essential starting point for learning about the people who defined the character of the Tar Heel state."
--William S. Price, Jr., Division of Archives and History, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources
